Kids’ Music Company

Started by Kiwis Janet Channon and Wendy Jensen in 1989, kids Music Company produces resources for children to learn through fun music activities.

Kids Music Company works from the philosophy that nature intended children to move and that movement helps neural pathways to develop for optimum brain development.

Channon and Jensen, who are world-renowned music education specialist, strongly advocate that music and movement is an essential component of normal child development.

A great place to start with Kids Music Company is the album Echo Fred – captivating and contagious music as well as echo games with Teddy and Fred, who live under the bed. Complete with a teacher’s book, there’s also opportunities for finger play activities (seahorse and caterpillar stories) and role-playing while singing – imagine driving a bus on a wet day or playing a trumpet. This CD is ideally for ages three to eight.

The Stay and Play Teacher Pack includes CD and instruction/activity guide for this collection that includes ideas important in the life of a young child. Topics like my body, my home, games, colours, numbers, friends, food, animals and playing instruments are explored on Stay and Play, which makes is an invaluable resource for the classroom.

Feeling the Beat is a CD for children up to age six and focuses on fun movement and playing instruments, with song themes that little children will love like teddy bears, clowns, puppets and colours. Likewise Swing Thing, a CD and teacher book, presents solid music concepts (great for teachers) in a way that children love. Songs include “Roll the ball’’, “On the Spot Freeze’’ and “Little Starfish to the Drum’’, which gives you an idea of the types of activities and concepts the music on Swing Thing opens up to children.

If you want to start as soon as possible introducing your child to music and movement concepts then Swing This Way – a CD and guidebook – is a great start. Young babies listen from inside the womb and Channon and Jensen have produced a nurturing selection of gentle music to nurture parent-child interactions. These songs encourage eye-tracking, tickle games, bouncing songs, peek-a-boo games and lullabies – all of these activities help babies to become more aware of their bodies. Suitable for zero to three year olds.

Mango Tango uses zany fruit characters to promote healthy fun and movement. A wide array of music styles on this CD, including reggae, rap, swing and tango – ensures plenty of action activities for little ones. Where else could you play shadows, drive a digger, dance with the dinosaurs, and cook a healthy breakfast for a giant? It is huge fun. This teacher pack has a guidebook, CD and data CD that includes lyrics and lead sheets (melody & guitar chords) in pdf format and planning grids.
