farmblogpost

A farm is full of life and inspiration for children. Some of the best-loved children’s songs are about farms (Old Macdonald Had a Farm, anyone?).

In Play School on the Farm DVD, the much-loved team explore the animals that live on farms through song, dance, stories and activities. Presenters Justine Clarke, Matt Passmore and Karen Pang take little viewers on a journey of a farm – Justine and Matt set up a play farm, real sheep come to visit the Play School set and the toys enjoy a game of cricket. Songs to sing along to include “Old McDonald”, “Little Boy Blue”, “Baa Baa Black Sheep”.

The book Old Macdonald Had a Farm from Child’s Play is colourfully illustrated and entertaining. It includes cutouts of each animal featured in the story and the sound each animal makes is written within the cutout. The benefit of the repetition in the book is that children are encourages to use their vocabulary to make the animal sounds and the rhymes and patterns of the song help improve memory and sequencing skills. There are also great opportunities to spend time together with your child and sing and Have fun. For classroom use this book is perfect for group or “mat” time.

Cows in the Kitchen by Airlie Anderson is a really fun tale of a farmer whose fields are empty. Farmer Tom starts to look for his animals so imagine his surprise at the places he finds them! This book has specially cut holes in the pages to give a clue to the reader about what comes next and literacy will be strengthened through learning about animals and the sounds they make. This book is appropriate for babies, toddlers and children up to six.

Legendary children’s musician Ronno has delighted children for decades and has produced music collections about so many subjects, including animals, people in our neighbourhood and fantasy. Ronno is highly regarded by education professionals for his sensitive, stirring songs and On The Farm blends the messages of animals, nature, the jobs that people do on the land and how to take care of our Earth. Some of the songs featured are “Wake Up, Farmer John!”, “Hooray for Farm Machines” and “Hello, Harvest Moon”.

Pam Schiller’s Fabulous Food is one of s series of eight music CDs about themes for children. This collection is, you guessed it, all about food and “the farm” features heavily as that is where our fresh food comes from. “Hinky Dinky “Double D” Farm”, “The Watermelon Song” and “Sippin’ Cider Through a Straw” are some of the fun, literacy-rich songs on this collection. The CD was produced under the guidance of Dr Pam Schiller, who is a well known and award winning education consultant in North America.
