Thomas and Friends

Thomas & Friends (formerly Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends) is a British children's television series which was first broadcast in 1984. Since its debut on UK television Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends has become a global classic, translated into 19 languages and broadcast in more than 130 countries. The series was based on The Railway Series, a series of books created by the Reverend W.V. Awdry. They deal with the adventures of a group of anthropomorphised trains and road vehicles who live on the fictional Island of Sodorin a traditional English countryside during the steam engine era. The books were based on stories Awdry told to entertain his son Christopher during his recovery from the measles. Many of the stories are based on events from Awdry's personal experience. Children are fascinated by the detail of Thomas and his friends - their colours, faces, numbers and allotted tasks on the railway - and identify with the jokes, friendships and rivalries. The show has been narrated by, amongst others, Ringo Starr, Michael Angelis, George Carlin and Alec Baldwin.
