Wendy Notley is a non-Aboriginal Early Childhood teacher. The inspiration to create a collection of children’s songs with an Aboriginal perspective came from three and a half years of teaching at Murawina Long Gay Care Centre in Eveleigh Street, Redfern. Murawina was established in the early 70’s by Aboriginal women for aboriginal children. “Aunty” is the term used at Murawina and in general Aboriginal community as a sign of respect and acceptance, hence the name of the band “Aunty Wendy’s Mob”. It was during her time there that she was able to learn something about Aboriginal culture. These are heart songs, written for all children to enjoy. They are important because they cross cultural borders and pass on information.
