Word–free book depicting everyday family situations. A little boy is very happy to see his baby sitter. They wave good-bye to Mum and Dad and then begin to have fun by having a puppet show and then playing with a puzzle. As the little boy begins to yawn, the baby sitter suggests it is time for bed. They have a snack and then they go upstairs to put on pyjamas, brush teeth and have a bedtime story. Then of course, the little boy is asleep. The last page shows Mum and Dad checking on the little boy when they come home. (no words)
Benefits:
* because there are no words, each time on these books is opened, the reader will be able to create a new and different story
* breaks down role stereotypes as there is a woman plumber and a man doing the housework
* children can easily “read” these books as they focus on very familiar experiences
* this series is very meaningful to children because of the topics – they can easily identify with the children in the books
* uses illustrations to communicate feelings
* encourages handling of books both to look at and play with the books (both essential in developing pre-reading skills)
* there is logical sequential development of story through illustrations; thus, it can be used for creative writing for children up to 10 years of age
* promotes understanding of concept through action pictures
* forms associations between talking and reading; these types of “imagination books” are wonderful for children who cannot yet read, but enjoy “make believe” and dress up by providing a visual script
* durability
Extended Thinking:
* “Let’s make a list of all the things your dad and mum does around the house”
* “What kind of things do you like to do with your baby sitter?”
* “What happens if your clothes get all muddy?”
* “If you were a plumber, how would you strop a leak?”
