Dream Children Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (All Ages)

‘Anyone who has settled a baby or a young child to sleep is aware of the importance of ensuring that the surroundings are quiet and tranquil and that the child feels snug and secure. Often adults read stories or sing lullabies to children to help them settle and rest. Recorded music too can be used to soothe and calm children and create an atmosphere of peace and restfulness. ‘Dream Children’ is a collection of orchestral music suitable for rest time, going to bed and other quiet time. Playing appropriate orchestral music at sleep time can also be a gentle but effective way of introducing and familiarizing children with the rich palette of symphonic sounds. The sensation of drifting off to sleep as orchestral music washes over them is a positive experience for most children. The Dream Children selections cover from music of the early eighteenth century to the present. There are well known favorites by Bach, Debussy and Ravel; Australian pieces by Anne Boyd, Andrew Schultz and Peter Sculthorpe; and miniatures by Mozart, Stravinsky and Delius. A number of the works included were specifically composed as orchestral lullabies; some are related to quiet aspects of the night, while others evoke a mood of placid repose’.
